Every good lawn starts with the grade
After a pool install, an addition or years of settling, a yard can be left rocky, lumpy and draining the wrong way. Grading reshapes the ground so it is smooth, even and slopes water away from the house, which is the foundation for everything that goes on top of it.
From rubble to ready
In the project pictured, the backyard beside a brand-new pool was left as compacted rock and dirt. It was graded smooth, a river rock bed was built along the pool with block edging and ornamental grasses, and the yard was left ready for a new lawn.
Then seed or sod
Once the grade is right, the area can be seeded or sodded. Fall is a great time to do both: grade now and seed while the soil is warm.
- Grading and leveling
- Rock and debris removal
- Topsoil and soil prep
- Slope away from the house
- Ready for seed or sod
- Beds and edging to finish

Fall 2026
Plant this fall. Thank yourself in spring.
Roots grow in warm fall soil while cooler air takes the stress off new plants. It is also the time to cut back perennials and grasses, trim overgrown shrubs and get the leaves off the lawn before winter. More in our guide to the best time to landscape in Western New York.
Questions about yard grading & lawn prep
Good questions.
Can you grade a yard after a pool install?
Yes. The project on this page is exactly that: rough ground next to a new pool graded smooth and finished.
Do you haul away rocks and debris?
Yes. Rock and debris are removed and the soil is prepared before seeding or sod.
Is grading done before seeding?
Always. Seed or sod goes down only once the grade is right.
