Landscape design around Lancaster

Lancaster yards tend to come in two kinds. Newer subdivisions have flat, open lots where the builder left a lawn and a few small shrubs. Older homes, many in and around the Village of Lancaster, have plantings that outgrew the house years ago.
Both end up with the same question: what should this yard look like? Without a plan, people add a shrub here and a bed there, and the yard never quite comes together.
We design the whole space at once. Beds, plants, walkways and a patio if you want one are laid out together. Plants are spaced for their full size and beds are shaped so they are easy to keep up. The result is a yard with structure that grows into itself instead of out of control.
It is the same approach as our landscape design service in West Seneca, about 10 miles away, and it ties into everything on our Lancaster landscaping page.

Landscape design in Lancaster: what to know
Landscape design for Lancaster's newer subdivisions
Much of the Town of Lancaster is suburban, with plenty of newer subdivisions mixed in among older streets. New lots are often flat, with thin topsoil over clay. Water can sit in the low spots, and beds can stay wet well into spring.
A good design for these lots deals with grading and drainage first. Then it adds height and shape, so the house does not look like it is sitting on a blank lawn. Foundation beds, a curved walkway and one or two trees can change the whole look of a new build.
Older homes, creek-side yards and mature plantings
Older properties often have big shrubs and trees worth keeping. A redesign does not mean starting over. We keep the healthy mature plants, take out what is crowded or failing and design new beds around what stays.
Cayuga Creek and Ellicott Creek both run west across the town, and Cayuga Creek passes through the village and Como Lake Park. Yards that slope toward a creek can have a low corner that stays wet. We plan for that with grading and plant choices instead of fighting it every spring.
Bigger lots east of Bowen Road
The eastern part of the town, past Bowen Road toward Town Line, still has a more rural feel and larger lots. On a big property, a design helps you decide where to put the effort. Most owners want the area near the house to look finished and the rest to stay simple to look after.
We focus the planting around the house and the drive, then use lawn, edging and a few larger plants to tie it into the open space. That keeps upkeep reasonable without making the property look bare.
Plan in fall, build when you are ready
Fall and winter are a good time to work out a design. That way the plan is ready once the ground thaws, or fall planting can begin while the soil is still warm.

Questions about landscape design in Lancaster
Not seeing yours? Call (716) 671-4971 and ask Patrick, or read the common questions.
Do you design landscapes for new builds in Lancaster?
Yes. New builds are one of the most common design jobs in Lancaster. We plan the beds, walkway and lawn together so the yard looks finished.
Can you redesign an older Lancaster yard without removing everything?
Yes. We keep the healthy mature plants and design the new beds around them.
Does the Town of Lancaster need to approve my landscape plan?
The Building Department lists permits for decks, fences, sheds, pools and hot tubs. If your design includes any of those, or you are unsure, check with that office at 21 Central Avenue before work starts.
What does a landscape design in Lancaster cost?
It depends on the size of the yard, how much changes and what gets installed. The consultation and estimate are free.
Who installs the plan once it is drawn?
Our own crew. The same team that plans the yard builds it, so nothing gets lost between the drawing and the install.
