Retaining walls around Grand Island

A bed that keeps washing out, a slope that sheds soil onto the lawn or an island bed that has lost its shape all point to the same need. A wall gives the ground a clear edge and holds it there. Built well, it also makes the yard look finished.
Grand Island is a town in Erie County on the largest island in the Niagara River. It covers about 33 square miles, with Beaver Island State Park at the south end and Buckhorn Island State Park at the north. Walls here are often about shaping beds and handling modest grade changes on residential lots.
Grand Island is about 22 miles from our base in West Seneca, across the South Grand Island Bridge on I-190. It is further out than our other towns, but some of our biggest recent projects happened here, and for larger jobs the drive is worth it.

Retaining walls in Grand Island: what to know
Our four-wall retaining wall job in Grand Island
On one Grand Island property, the island beds had grown out of proportion with the yard. We resized and reshaped them and built four new landscape walls to hold the new lines.
The areas cut out of the old beds were sodded, so the lawn now runs cleanly up to each wall. New plants went into the rebuilt beds. The photos on this page and on our recent jobs page are from that project.
Why the base matters on the island
Most wall failures start underneath. In Western New York, water in the soil freezes, expands and thaws many times each winter. A wall set on loose soil will lean or bow as that happens.
We dig out the line of the wall, put the base in and compact it before the first course goes down. If water sits where it should not, the ground gets reshaped first. Our guide to retaining wall drainage explains why that step matters.
Walls planned with the whole yard
A wall is rarely a project on its own. It changes where beds start and stop, where the lawn goes and how water moves. We plan the wall, the grade, the plantings and the sod or seed together so the pieces fit.
That was the point of the island bed job. The walls set the shape, the sod filled the gaps and the plants finished it off.
Before you build
Taller walls and walls near property lines can come with rules. Check with the Town of Grand Island building department before work starts, and we can help you figure out what to ask.
Wall work usually runs until the ground freezes, if the weather cooperates. Call (716) 671-4971 or send the form, and Patrick will come out to look at the yard.

Have you built retaining walls on Grand Island before?
Yes. We resized island beds on a Grand Island property and built four new landscape walls, then sodded the cut-out areas and added new plants.
Is Grand Island too far for a wall project?
No. It is about 22 miles from West Seneca, and for wall and bed projects the drive is worth it. The estimate is free.
What keeps a landscape wall from leaning?
A dug and compacted base under the first course, and grading that keeps water from collecting behind the wall.
Can you add sod and plants after the wall goes in?
Yes. Most wall jobs finish with planting, sod or seed and final grading, all done by the same crew.
