Fall cleanups: put the yard to bed properly

Overgrown ornamental grasses along a covered pool in fall before cleanup

Fall is the time to cut back perennials and ornamental grasses, trim overgrown shrubs and clear leaves out of the lawn and beds before snow covers them. Wet leaves left on the grass all winter smother it and invite fungus and dead spots. A good fall cleanup is the difference between a quick spring refresh and a spring rescue job. More on fall landscaping.

Spring cleanups: recover from winter

After a Western New York winter, beds are full of leaves, branches and debris, edges have disappeared and last year's growth is still standing. A spring cleanup clears it out, reshapes the beds and gets them ready for fresh mulch and the growing season.

Done thoroughly, not quickly

Every cleanup starts with a look at the property and the plants in it. Then the work gets done properly: debris cleared, beds cleaned out and edged, dead growth cut back and the property walked at the end to make sure it is finished.

Fall planting and cleanups

Roots grow in warm fall soil while cooler air takes the stress off new plants. It is also the time to cut back perennials and grasses, trim overgrown shrubs and get the leaves off the lawn before winter. More in our guide to the best time to landscape in Western New York.

Questions about spring & fall cleanups

Not seeing yours? Call (716) 671-4971 and ask Patrick, or read the common questions.

When should I book a fall cleanup?

Early. Most people wait until the leaves are down, which is when schedules fill. Getting on the list in September or early October is best.

What happens in a fall cleanup?

Leaves cleared from lawn and beds, perennials and grasses cut back, shrubs trimmed, beds cleaned out and edged, and debris hauled away.

Is a spring cleanup still needed if I had a fall cleanup?

Usually a lighter one. Winter still leaves debris and broken branches, but a fall cleanup makes spring much faster.
