Landscape design cost in Western New York depends mostly on how big the project is, how much of the existing yard is changing, and which plants and hardscape materials go into the plan. The quickest way to a real number is a free consultation, where we walk the property and price the design and installation together.

What you are paying for in a landscape design

A landscape design is a plan for how the yard will look and work: where beds go, what is planted in them, where people walk and sit, and how water moves across the property. The bigger cost is usually not the drawing. It is building what the drawing shows.

That is why it helps to price design and installation together. A plan drawn without thinking about how it will be built can look good on paper and cost far more in the ground.

Our designs are drawn with installation and upkeep in mind and installed by the same team, so the estimate you get reflects the finished yard, not just the idea of it. The broader landscaping cost guide covers the general factors for every type of job.

Size and scope of the project

A refreshed front foundation bed and a full front and back yard redesign are very different jobs, even though both are called landscape design.

Scope is the biggest single driver. More square footage means more soil prep, more plants, more mulch and edging, and more hours. Adding a backyard patio, a walkway to the side door or new beds along the fence each adds its own materials and labor.

Many homeowners start with the area that matters most to them, usually the front of the house, and plan the rest for a later season. A good design makes that possible without redoing work later.

What happens to the existing landscape

Starting from bare ground after new construction is one kind of job. Redesigning an established yard is another. Old shrubs, overgrown beds, stone and tired sod all have to come out before anything new goes in, and removal and haul-off are real parts of the work.

On the other hand, keeping good mature plants saves money. A healthy shrub that is already a good size is worth working around.

The two front-yard redesigns on our Hamburg landscaping page both started with overgrown, dated beds. Each was replanted with new beds and shrubs, and the scope of what came out shaped each estimate as much as what went in.

Plants, hardscape and materials

Plant choices move the price in two ways: how many and how big. Larger shrubs and trees look finished on day one but cost more to buy and plant. Smaller plants cost less and grow in over a few seasons. Most designs mix both, with a few larger anchor plants and smaller fill.

Hardscape usually makes the biggest swing in a design budget. Paver patios, walkways, retaining walls and granite cobblestone edging all need excavation and a proper base that holds up through freeze and thaw.

Mulch type, decorative stone and edging materials vary too. We walk through the options during the consultation so you can see where spending more matters and where it does not.

Site conditions: slope, soil, drainage and access

Two yards of the same size can price very differently because of what is underneath. Heavy clay, common across Western New York, often needs amending before beds can be planted. Low spots that hold water may need grading before anything else.

Slopes add work. A sloped backyard might need a retaining wall to create a level area for a patio or bed, which changes the scope considerably.

Access matters as well. If equipment can drive into the backyard, the work goes faster. If every load of soil and stone has to go through a narrow gate by hand, that takes longer. These are the things we look at when we walk the property.

How to plan the budget and timing

Fall and winter are good months to plan. A design worked out in the off-season is ready to start as soon as the ground allows in spring, and fall planting can go in right away while the soil is still warm.

Phasing is a practical way to spread a project out. The design covers the whole property, then the work is installed one area at a time, often the front first and the back the following year.

Be clear about what matters most to you: privacy, curb appeal, a place to sit, less upkeep. That lets the design put the budget where it counts. Our process runs from consultation to plan, install and follow-up.

The short version

  • Scope is the biggest driver of landscape design cost.
  • Removing an old landscape adds labor; keeping good mature plants saves money.
  • Hardscape like patios and walls makes the biggest swing in a budget.
  • Clay, slope, drainage and access all change the price.
  • Consultations and estimates are free, and a design can be installed in phases.

Quick answers

How much does landscape design cost?

It depends on the size of the area, how much of the existing yard is changing, the plants and hardscape chosen, and site conditions like slope and drainage. A free consultation gets you a real number for your property.

Is a landscape design consultation free?

Yes. Consultations and estimates are free, so you can see your options before committing.

Can a landscape design be installed in phases?

Yes. The plan covers the whole property, and the work can be built one area at a time over more than one season.

Does it cost more to redesign an existing yard than start from scratch?

It can, because old plants, stone and sod have to be removed and hauled away. Keeping healthy mature plants offsets some of that.
