Frequently asked questions

Not seeing yours? Call (716) 671-4971 and ask Patrick, or read the common questions.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Consultations and estimates are free, so you can see your options before committing to anything.

Is fall a good time to plant?

Absolutely. Plants put their energy into roots in the fall, the cooler air means less stress, and they come into spring already established.

What areas do you serve?

West Seneca, Orchard Park, Hamburg, Lancaster, Elma and East Aurora, plus Lackawanna, Grand Island and surrounding Western New York towns when the project is a good fit.

Do you handle small and large projects?

Yes. Everything from a one-time cleanup or trimming to full landscape design and installation.

How far ahead should I book?

As early as you can, especially for fall cleanups and spring installs. Calling early helps with scheduling and planning.

Do you offer snow removal?

Yes, through our dedicated winter company, The Big Freeze LLC: residential driveways, walkways and commercial lots.

Are your services residential only?

The focus is residential landscaping, but commercial projects are considered depending on scope and location.

How do I get started?

Call (716) 671-4971 or send the form on this page to set up a consultation.

Is fall a good time to plant shrubs and perennials?

Yes. Roots keep growing in warm fall soil while the cooler air takes the stress off the plant, so fall plantings are established by spring.

What does landscape maintenance include?

Shrub and hedge trimming, mulch, bed edging and reshaping, debris removal and seasonal cleanups, scheduled around your property.

When should I book a fall cleanup?

Early. Most people wait until the leaves are down, which is when schedules fill. Getting on the list in September or early October is best.

How deep should mulch be?

Deep enough to hold moisture and block weeds, kept back from stems and trunks. Too much smothers roots; we lay it at the right depth for each bed.

When is the best time to trim shrubs in Western New York?

It depends on the shrub. Flowering shrubs are usually trimmed after they bloom; many overgrown shrubs and hedges are brought back in fall.

Is sod or seed better?

Sod is instant and handles slopes and high-traffic areas well; seed costs less and suits larger areas where you can wait. It depends on the site and timeline.

Do you charge for a design consultation?

Consultations and estimates are free.

Can you install in the fall?

Yes. Fall is one of the best times to plant in Western New York. Hardscape can usually continue until the ground freezes.

Do you build retaining walls?

Yes: landscape and retaining walls for beds and yard grades, like the Grand Island project with four new walls.

Can you grade a yard after a pool install?

Yes. The project on this page is exactly that: rough ground next to a new pool graded smooth and finished.

How soon after sewer work can the lawn be repaired?

Once the plumbing work is finished and inspected. The sooner it is regraded, the less settling and erosion.

Who does the snow removal?

The Big Freeze LLC, Patrick's dedicated winter company. Call the same number to get set up.

Fall planting and cleanups

Roots grow in warm fall soil while cooler air takes the stress off new plants. It is also the time to cut back perennials and grasses, trim overgrown shrubs and get the leaves off the lawn before winter. More in our guide to the best time to landscape in Western New York.
