In West Seneca, Orchard Park and Hamburg, the town highway department picks up leaves and brush, but each town sets its own rules on bags, piles and timing. West Seneca takes yard waste on garbage day in paper bags or open containers, Orchard Park collects brush monthly and loose leaves from October to May 1, and the Town of Hamburg sends brush crews out March through November and picks up bagged leaves in fall.

Rather skip the bags, piles and pickup calendar? Our cleanups include haul-away, so the leaves, cut perennials and branches leave with us instead of waiting at the curb for a town crew.

West Seneca leaf pickup

The Town of West Seneca gives you two choices for leaves. The first is to put them out on your regular garbage day in paper lawn and leaf bags or in open, reusable containers. Plastic bags are not picked up. Containers should weigh no more than 50 pounds, and only yard waste goes in them.

The second choice is to push loose leaves to the curb and wait for the leaf vacuum crews. Keep branches in a separate pile and do not push leaves into the street. The town works zone by zone and posts the current zone on its website. Its page notes that calling will not speed things up. Yard waste goes to the town compost site at 500 Mineral Springs Road.

West Seneca brush and yard waste

Branches up to 4 feet long can go out on garbage day in an open container or tied in bundles. Longer branches and cut bushes go at the curb with the stems all facing the same way, without blocking the sidewalk or street. A chipper crew collects those one neighborhood at a time, and the town says that can take up to three weeks.

For faster service, residents can drop yard waste at the compost site, open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Residents can also take free mulch and compost there with proof of residency. The town's Highway and Sanitation Departments moved to 100 Gemcor Drive in May 2026, so check the town website for current contacts.

Orchard Park brush pickup

The Town of Orchard Park Highway Department collects brush once a month on a posted schedule. Brush must be at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Regular piles can be no bigger than 10 feet long by 4 feet high, with branches up to 4 inches across.

Logs up to 24 inches in diameter must be cut into 18 to 24 inch lengths and stacked neatly. Larger logs are not taken. The town also lists items it will not collect: grass clippings, stumps, lumber, fencing, old decking, railroad ties, tires, construction waste and electronics. Tree waste from lots without an occupied home is not collected either.

Orchard Park leaf collection

Loose leaf collection in Orchard Park is a separate service from brush and does not follow the monthly brush schedule. It runs from October into spring. Leaves have to be at the curb before April 15, and the town provides no collection after May 1.

Keep leaf piles apart from brush piles so each crew can do its job. If you miss a pickup, the town's composting facility at 6909 Milestrip Road takes brush and leaves during business hours. The Highway Department is on South Taylor Road near Big Tree Road, and its page lists the current schedule. If you live in Orchard Park, our Orchard Park landscaping page covers the work we do there.

Town of Hamburg and the Village of Hamburg

The Town of Hamburg Highway Department runs two brush crews through town from March through November, weather permitting. Those crews also pick up bagged leaves during the fall. The town's page notes that this service is not available to residents of the Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell.

The Village of Hamburg runs its own program with different rules. It collects loose leaves only, starting in fall, and asks residents not to bag them or put them in totes. Brush goes out by 7:00 a.m. on the last Monday of each month, up to 4 inches across and 6 feet long, large end toward the road. Grass clippings are not collected. Check with your Highway Department or the village DPW for current dates. Our Hamburg landscaping page covers the work we do there.

What about debris from a landscaper?

Town pickup is set up for homeowners. West Seneca's yard waste page states that contractors hired by residents must remove all yard debris from the property, including trimmings, branches, stumps and root balls. The Village of Hamburg says it will not collect brush or tree parts produced by commercial contractors.

That is why our cleanups include haul-away. When we finish a fall or spring cleanup, the leaves, cut perennials and branches leave with us, so nothing sits at your curb waiting for a crew. If you would rather skip the bags and the pickup calendar, see our spring and fall cleanups or the fall cleanup checklist.

Tips that apply in every town

Never rake or blow leaves into the street. Wet leaves block storm drains and make roads slick, and both West Seneca and the Village of Hamburg spell this out. Keep leaves and brush in separate piles. Do not mix in rocks, dirt, lumber or household trash.

Rules and dates change from year to year, and these notes reflect what each town posted in fall 2026. Before you set anything out, check the current schedule with your town highway department. If you would rather hand the whole job off, call (716) 671-4971 for a free cleanup estimate.

The short version

  • West Seneca takes yard waste on garbage day in paper bags or open containers, never plastic.
  • Orchard Park collects brush monthly and loose leaves from October until May 1.
  • The Town of Hamburg picks up bagged leaves in fall; the Village of Hamburg wants them loose.
  • Towns expect contractors to haul away the debris they create.
  • Never push leaves into the street, and check your town's current schedule first.

Regular piles can be up to 10 feet long by 4 feet high, with branches up to 4 inches across. Logs must be cut and stacked.

Does the Town of Hamburg pick up leaves?

Yes, its brush crews pick up bagged leaves in the fall. Residents of the Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell follow their village's own rules instead.
