Hardscape and landscape, together
Hardscape is the structure of a yard: the patio you sit on, the walk to the door, the walls that hold a bed or shape an island, the edging that keeps mulch and lawn apart. Designed together with the plantings, it makes the whole property feel finished.
Recent hardscape work
One backyard got a patio of large pavers with pea gravel set and glued between them, a clean and durable finish. In Grand Island, island beds were resized and reshaped with four new landscape walls, fresh sod and new plants. Other projects finish beds with granite cobblestone edging and decorative stone.
A base that lasts
Most hardscape problems come from what is underneath. Proper excavation, base and compaction keep pavers and walls from heaving through freeze-thaw cycles.

Fall 2026
Plant this fall. Thank yourself in spring.
Roots grow in warm fall soil while cooler air takes the stress off new plants. It is also the time to cut back perennials and grasses, trim overgrown shrubs and get the leaves off the lawn before winter. More in our guide to the best time to landscape in Western New York.
Questions about hardscaping, patios & walls
Good questions.
Do you build retaining walls?
Yes: landscape and retaining walls for beds and yard grades, like the Grand Island project with four new walls.
Can you combine a patio with new landscaping?
Yes, and it usually looks best when they are planned together.
How late in the year can hardscape be installed?
Usually until the ground freezes, weather permitting.
